Today's Devotional:

"FINGERPRINTS"

by
Jan Andersen

A fingerprint is an impression of the pattern of ridges on a person’s finger, formed during the growing process in the womb.  It is a pattern that is unique to each individual and does not change as we age.  Even identical twins have different fingerprints.  That is why they are used in forensics at a crime scene to help determine who has touched a glass or metal surface where the moisture and oils on their fingers or thumbs have left an imprint.  A guilty person can try to change their name and appearance, but their fingerprints will reveal their identity.  Fingerprints are also being used to identify who is allowed to use something, like when people open their cell phones with fingerprint technology, or gain access to secure areas.  They can even be used to help identify an amnesia victim or an unknown deceased person.  Fingerprints are one very accurate way to identify a person.

God doesn’t need to see our fingerprints to identify who we are.  He knows each one of us intimately.  He created us, fingerprints and all!  Each of us has a unique history and set of gifts that He wants us to use to leave an imprint on others’ lives.  And He certainly doesn’t need a fingerprint to determine who is guilty of the “crime” of sin, because we all hold that title.  Try as we might to follow his commandments, none of us can do that perfectly.  Thankfully He offers us his merciful forgiveness.

God can clearly be identified and seen from what He created.  The world is full of the ordered intricacies of his workmanship - his fingerprints!  Who can look at the amazing and complicated interworking of all the parts of the human body without seeing it had to be created by a divine nature.  The more we learn about the world, the more complicated it gets.  The more microscopic we can see, the more we discover the complexities and how they must have been created by an all-powerful Being, much greater than ourselves.

Romans 1:20 (ESV) For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made…

God’s fingerprints are all over this universe!  He set the planets in motion around our sun, scattered the stars in the heavens, and created things we haven’t even discovered yet.  His fingerprints are also all over our lives, from forming us in our mothers’ wombs, to guiding our faltering steps in our attempts to follow Him while we move through this life, and ultimately to giving his one and only Son to die on the cross in our place and rise again to eternal life.  The nail-pierced hands of Jesus were a part of God’s fingerprint-plan from the very beginning of time, to bring us the free gift of salvation by grace through faith in Him.

Dear Father in heaven, we thank you for knowing us so well that you planned far in advance how to save us from our sinfulness through your Son, Jesus Christ.  Sometimes in life we see things very clearly, and other times they are hidden or blurred.  Help us to see your fingerprints all over our lives, reminding us that You are always there, guiding us through the twists and turns.  May we always trust in You and remain ever faithful.  In Jesus’ name,  Amen.
