Today's Devotional:

"TEARS OF SORROW"

by
Jan Andersen

Sometimes we cry tears of joy, but most of the time tears are a sign of pain or sorrow.  When the enormity of our anguish overwhelms our hearts, tears overflow our eyes and cascade down our cheeks, baptizing them with a warm wash and trickling off our face, falling in a gentle shower of sadness if not caught with a tissue or wiped away with a hand.  Sometimes when we are in such deep despair, we don’t know what to pray to God, but our tears speak volumes to Him!  Even Jesus wept tears of sorrow so He knows our heartache intimately.  It is not a sign of weakness but a sign that we are alive and have deep feelings that we acknowledge and allow to come out. It is a way to release the intense emotions that if kept bottled up inside would eat away at our insides and not allow full healing.

Just as the water of our tears washes our eyes and cheeks and helps heal our hearts, Jesus gives us “living water” that heals our souls eternally.  Once we are in heaven, God promises to wipe away all our tears of sorrow, to fully heal us and restore our hearts so there will be no more sadness or suffering.  We can look forward to being filled with joy.

Revelation 7:17 (NIV)  For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ [from Isaiah 49:10]
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’ [from Isaiah 25:8]”

Dear Father in heaven, thank you for being there for us every step of the way, even when tears of sorrow overflow.  Help us to see our tears as a symbol of You washing away our despair and to remember that You have promised complete healing in heaven, which you have given us as a free gift through your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray.  Amen.

  1. Wow Jan you have done it again. This is a good slant on tears and sorrow. I was hurt recently by something someone said to me. It brought me to despair over some things in the past. It is not anything that I can fix now, and an apology seems beyond lame. Your writing really lifted me up.
    Thank you and God bless,

  2. This really touched my heart deeply. Since I am going through so much grief and loss over those close to me, and now dealing with my sister's recent cancer diagnosis, I have shed a lot of tears. Prayer and tears is what is getting me through. I love the passage about "tears in a bottle." May God bless you as you continue to share His word and your thoughts as you do.
