Monday Writing...5/6/19... "Having a Humble Heart"

Good Morning,

The theme of today's writing is the importance of having a humble heart and to not brag about how wonderful you are.  Bre Williams wrote, "If you feel like you’re doing everything right, but you’re not sure if you have a humble heart and attitude, reflect on this: What is my motive? To serve God, or to build myself up?"

Humility is the attribute all need to to be a viable servant of God.

Blessings

"Having a Humble Heart"

Written by
Bre Miller

He told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:

“Two men went up into the temple to pray,
one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself:
‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people:
swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’
But the tax collector, standing some distance away,
was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven,
but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful
to me, the sinner!’ I tell you, this man went to his house
justified rather than the other; for everyone
who exalts himself will be humbled, but he
who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Luke 18:9-14
NASB

Sometimes we can get carried away with trying to do everything right; checking things off of a list. The Bible has certain commands, such as: Go to church, tithe, obey your parents, don’t have sex before marriage, don’t get drunk, serve others. These are all good things, but we need to make sure that everything we do, we do humbly. Not for recognition, but because we know Jesus deserves our devotion; because we know it’s the right thing to do. The  Pharisee in the passage above did everything right, on paper.

But his heart was nasty. His heart was full on conceit and contempt for others. His heart wasn’t focused on serving God. The tax collector technically wasn’t living the perfect life, but he recognized that and humbly admitted he was a sinner. He knew he could never measure up to what God asked of him, which is why he cried out and asked for mercy. Sometimes I can be guilty of just going through the motions and trying to check everything off of my list, instead of living every day with a humble heart and asking God to transform me from the inside out.

We can never be good enough on our own. That’s why we have to humble ourselves and ask God for mercy and forgiveness. Sometimes we need to come to him and admit that we aren’t good enough. If you feel like you’re doing everything right, but you’re not sure if you have a humble heart and attitude, reflect on this: What is my motive? To serve God, or to build myself up?
