Today's Devotional:

"LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!"

by
Jan Andersen

We are all probably familiar with that phrase that we think is used on film sets at the beginning of a take, a series of cues for the crew to get ready for the filming of that particular scene/segment.  Unfortunately, it is a myth that “Lights, camera, action!” is said by the director for checking the lights one last time, getting the cameras rolling, and ordering the acting to begin.  There is a bit longer sequence of things said by various people on the crew, and “action” is probably the only thing the director says at the end of it all.  But let’s roll with it!

First you need the proper type and amount of lights, then you need the camera pointed in the right direction and in focus and turned on, and finally you need the actors to act out the script.  Without the lights the scene will not show up properly on the film.  Without the camera recording, the scene will be lost.  Without the action, the story will not be told.

Light makes things visible, whereas darkness makes those things much harder to see.  When something is written down or recorded in some way, it has lasting power to impress more people.  But none of this matters if no action is ever taken.  The action has a more lasting message when it conveys something extremely important, lasting, and life changing.

1 John 1:5-7 NIV  This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

God is light: holy and unchanging.  Satan is darkness: evil and wicked.  If we say we are God’s followers yet do not live a righteous repentant life, we are lying and actually following Satan.  But if we try to live according to God’s commands and repent when we fail and remain faithful in Jesus, we are walking in His light, like all other believers here on earth.  We are in fellowship/spiritual union with the whole body of Christ, and Christ himself.  Thankfully, when we do mess up and turn our backs to Him daily, He freely forgives us.  The blood Jesus shed on the cross covers our sins and makes us righteous, because we can never be righteous on our own account.  We are washed by the blood of Jesus, and awash in God’s light!

All the world's a stage, so “lights, camera, action!”  We are in God’s light, others eyes are like cameras watching us here on earth, and our actions need to present a clear and good witness.  In that way then they too can come to faith in Jesus and be covered by His blood and righteousness.  Don’t let it be just “an act” - let it be your whole life!

Dear Father God, we thank you for your blessings in this life.  Help us to follow your will, walk in your light, and be good witnesses of your loving, merciful forgiveness, by the power of your Holy Spirit and through your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
