Today's Devotional:

GOD IS

by
Jan Andersen

How would you finish the sentence, “God is ____”?   First of all, God is real.  There are so many ways to complete that sentence from God’s word.  God is the creator.  God is love.  He is righteous, faithful, merciful, forgiving, ever-present, compassionate, gracious, generous, abounding in love, our rock and our fortress, our salvation, our refuge and strength, our help in times of trouble, our guide, our strength, our portion, a sun and shield, and so forth.  But He is also a just God, angry with those who turn from him, a consuming or devouring fire, mighty, jealous (wanting us to come to Him alone), victorious against enemies, all-knowing, all-powerful, all-seeing, and our judge.

Many of these things seem to be opposites.  It can strike fear in our hearts to hear of God’s wrath and vengeance, since we are not able to keep his laws perfectly, and He knows all and sees all.  Yet we know God is all of those loving terms as well.  Thankfully, He sent his Son, Jesus, to fulfill his laws and take our punishment for our sins, giving us forgiveness and eternal life.

God tells Moses his name is “I Am.”  Therefore, we could complete that original sentence with just a period: “God is.”  God has always existed and always will be present, eternally.  Jesus says He is “I Am” as well, so we know Jesus is also God.  Jesus says I am the bread of life, the light of the world, the vine, the door or gate, living water, the way, the truth, the life, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life.  Most importantly, Jesus is our Savior.  God is... all of these things.

Once we know all of this about God, we can trust Him and rest peacefully in his hands.  Because He knows all that we go through and is always with us to help us and will work all things for our good, we have no reason to fear.  He even tells us over and over not to be afraid.  The great “I Am” will see us through!

Isaiah 41:10 ESV. Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Dearest God, the great “I Am”, we thank you for always being there for us, holding us up and helping us through with your righteous right hand.  Forgive us when we falter and fail.  Help us to hold out our hands to others to bring them to You.  In Jesus’ name we pray,  Amen.
