Friday Writing...6/15/18..."Some People Have All The Luck!"

Good Morning,

the theme for today is covetousness and the wreck it makes of a greedy person's life. David is a prime example of human wretchedness because he coveted someone elses wife leading to terrible sin and challenges. Karen wrote, "Father, please help us to be content with all the gifts and blessings You have already given us. May we be devoted to sharing with others the love and promises of Your Kingdom rather than living for monetary self-gain. All we truly need to enjoy this life is faith in You and Your word!"

Praying for the ability to be satisfied with our lives and possessions.

"Some People Have All The Luck!”
by Karen Bennett

How often have you heard these words, or perhaps even said them? Envy, greed, lust, and enviousness all belong to the “Covet Family.” That particular sin can lead you to all the rest. We have commandments against coveting! It’s playing with the fire of temptation and can ignite actions in us of the most destructive kind. The Bible mentions these emotions many times!

David is a perfect illustration. After seeing Bathsheba bathing from his rooftop, he was stricken by her beauty and sent someone to find out about her. He was told her name was Bathsheba and she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Knowing this, David still had her brought to him and slept with her. Uriah was away at war and Bathsheba became pregnant.

Uriah was an upstanding man, but David had him ordered to the fierce fighting at the front lines and once he was there to have the other soldiers withdraw. Uriah was killed and David took Bathsheba as his own. His lust for her resulted in murder.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife
or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or his donkey,
or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Exodus 20:17

When we’re greedy for more fame, money, possessions, or whatever, we need to appeal to our Heavenly Father to help us avoid temptation and be content with all He has given us. The greater majority of people are unable to handle wealth and fame. Those things take the place of God in people’s lives because their desire for more is never fully satisfied. They concentrate their life’s efforts on amassing and not losing things rather than dedicating their lives to the living God who holds THE incomparable gift in His hands - the gift of salvation and its eternal life in heaven - that can’t be purchased with any sum.

Coveting can also lead to theft, false witness, and virtually every sin and a multitude of ways to commit them. The peace that comes from leading a life of faith in Christ is what we should be seeking!

“Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
1 Timothy 6:6.

Father, please help us to be content with all the gifts and blessings You have already given us. May we be devoted to sharing with others the love and promises of Your Kingdom rather than living for monetary self-gain. All we truly need to enjoy this life is faith in You and Your word! Let us not envy and covet the possessions of others.
“For where you have envy and self-ambition,
there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
James 3:16

In Your name, we pray. Amen.

It is important that we do not let the desire for acquisitions become
as tall as the Empire State Building when our budget is
the height of a dog house. To do that causes debt that will be
impossible to pay off and which will ruin our lives.

  1. Well said. We also do not know if the possessions that others have are costing them much more than they know themselves.
