FOURTH CHRISTMAS WEEK WRITING... 12/29/18... "Christmas Tree Toppers"

REPOST of the 4th of 4 writings about trees this Christmas season:

Good morning!

This is the final Sunday writing in a month long series about trees leading up to Christmas.  We started with family trees and the Jesse tree, then went on to Christmas trees and the decorations we put on them.  Today we will focus on what we put on the top of our Christmas trees, "TREE-TOPPERS," and the significance of them.

May you be blessed as we fast approach the celebration of our Savior's birth!

Today's Devotional:

"TREE-TOPPERS"

by
Jan Andersen

We see so many different ways to decorate a Christmas tree, from simple and subdued to very ornate, and what is placed on top of the tree is no exception.  A quick Google search can reveal a huge array of ways to top your tree.  I’ve seen a huge bow, a pinwheel, lollipops and baubles, sprigs of red berries, Santas and sleighs, hats, flowers, and even a variation on the traditional star - a Star Wars Death Star!  Traditional tree-toppers besides stars have also been angels.  When trees first started to be brought into the house and decorated, a figure of baby Jesus was also often used.

The angel at the top of the tree can be a symbol of the angel Gabriel, who announced to Mary she was going to give birth to Jesus, God’s Son.  It can also remind us of the angel that came to the shepherds to announce the birth of the Savior, and then the multitude of angels praising God.

Luke 2:14 ESV  “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

A star tree-topper represents the Bethlehem star that led the wise men or magi to find the Christ child.  Like the angel speaking to the shepherds, it points the way to Jesus.  These tree-toppers have deeper meaning that just to complete the decorations of our Christmas tree.  They are to continually be a reminder to us that Jesus is Lord over all.  We are not to worship the stars or the angels themselves, but the One to whom they point, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  May all that we do this Christmas be a reminder of the Christ child and point others to him as well!

Dear Father in heaven, we thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, down to earth as a tiny little baby, to live among us and be our Savior.  Just as the Star of Bethlehem and the angels in the Christmas story and on top of many of our Christmas trees point us to you, may we also point others to you by our words and actions.  As we look at the decorations and tree-toppers this year, help us to remember You in all of it.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
