Good Morning,
Jan Andersen authored the writing for today, and she called her writing, "GET READY." She writes about Advent, a time to get ready for Jesus. She writes, "We are preparing for the celebration of his birth, and we are also awaiting his second coming."
Praying you have a "ready" Sunday, and please continue to pray for our country.
God bless,
Corinne & Jan

Get ready! Today is the beginning of Advent. It is a period of waiting and getting ready for the coming of the Christ. We are preparing for the celebration of his birth, and we are also awaiting his second coming.
There are lots of ways that people get ready for Christmas. Often that includes buying gifts for people on a list they have made. Some people buy those gifts throughout the year, and others wait until the last minute. This past Friday is called "Black Friday" because that is the day of the year that many stores get out of the "red" debt period and finally show a profit for the year by enticing shoppers out with huge deals for Christmas shopping. There always seem to be news stories of people who have camped out, sometimes for many days, in front of the stores with the greatest specials in order to get one of the limited number of items for sale. To try to get a jump on their competitors, some stores open very early in the morning or even lately on the day before, Thanksgiving Day. Then there are the reports of people getting trampled in the stampede through the doors when they open, or getting into fights over the "last one" on the shelf of the most popular items. So what started out as a positive thing like giving gifts, can be corrupted by our human nature when we forget what is truly important.
There are so many examples of how things have gotten out of hand with our getting ready for Christmas. This includes the true life of Saint Nicolas becoming the convoluted story of a jolly fellow flying through the air in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer and entering homes through their chimneys to give good boys and girls presents they have asked for in letters crafted and sent to the North Pole where little elves make the toys. Reminds me of the childhood game of "telephone" where the original message morphs into something totally different by the time it is whispered from one person to the next.
Thankfully we have the truth of the birth of Jesus in the Bible, where His genuine story never changes. What is a good way to get ready during this Advent season? Remember the real reason for our preparations for this season - the coming of the Christ. All of our earthly things will some day pass away, but God will remain and the faithful will join him in heaven at the second coming of Christ. We must always be ready for that day, for no one knows when it will be. How do we do that? By remaining faithful in Christ Jesus. God is the one who gets us ready, by giving us the Christ child, his Son who later died in our place and rose again for our salvation, forgiving us of all our wrong doings and convoluted stories and corrupted practices, and planting faith in our hearts through his Holy Spirit.
Matthew 24:35-36, 42 and 44 (NIV) [Jesus said:] "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father... Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come... So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
Dear Father in heaven, thank you for giving us the free gift of faith and forgiveness through your son Jesus and for getting us ready for his second coming. Help us to share your love with others as we get ready to celebrate his birth at Christmas. May this time be used to be good witnesses to others in all that we say and do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
