Monday Writings......8/1/16

Good morning...

I had a very nice weekend. Not too busy, but not boring either. In fact, it was just right. Hope your weekend was a good one as well. Have a great week to come.

God bless from

The Devotional component in the Friday Writings of Women's Focus Ministries is titled, "The Footnote" and was written by Mary Wilkins. The theme of this devotional that there are those of us women who work themselves to exhaustion feeling that all depend on them to get everything. However in the scriptures that Mary shared she found what she called a "footnote" a scripture that promises that God can give her rest.  Mary wrote, "Dear Lord, thank You for making Your Word so simple and clear for me just when I need it. I desire to learn from You and to trade my yoke for Your yoke..."

"The Footnote"
written by
Mary M. Wilkins

Do you enjoy reading? Do you give yourself permission to relax and enjoy a book or favorite magazine? I love to read. Even during the craziness known as getting ready for Christmas I reread A Christmas Carol by Dickens (A surprisingly short story, by the way) and any other warm fuzzy book I come upon.

I appreciate when editors take the time to add footnotes to older stories to remind a modern reader what a particular word means or what an item was used for in the past. I feel a little more informed and a little more aware when I understand what the author was referring to originally.

As I am looking on the front page of the website www.biblegateway.com I see the verse of the day is:

“Come to Me,
all who are weary and heavy-laden,
and I will give you rest.
“Matthew 11: 28
(NASB)

Ah, thank You, Lord, for the reminder that we can come to You to receive rest from our weariness. Then I click on the “View in Context” button to read what scripture comes next. There is a footnote for verse 28 above, the words “all who are weary and heavy-laden” can also be read as “all who work to exhaustion.”

Wow, I agree I can be weary and heavy-laden and in need of His rest. But this footnote drove the truth of this scripture deep into my heart, showing me a wrong thought. My belief that if I just get ‘these few things’ done, then I can relax. It exposed me as one of “all who work to exhaustion.” But Lord, I need to get all these things done. How can I rest when so much depends
upon me? Clean clothes, food, errands, children,
church, pets, and work fill my days.

Very conveniently, I find the answer to my question in the next verse:

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”
Matthew 11:29
(NASB)

Dear Lord, thank You for making Your Word so simple and clear for me just when I need it. I desire to learn from You and to trade my yoke for Your yoke, so how do I do that? OK, I learn from You by being gentle and humble and reading Your word. Reality check: I cannot be gentle and humble in my own strength for long, so please help me to remember to read Your word every day so that my mind and heart will learn and be filled with Your truth. In Jesus name, amen.

   A Beautiful Prayer

Prayer of Celebration

God of Wonders,
I celebrate you and your creation miracles.
I celebrate your creation and formation of the earth with all of its beauty.
I celebrate the lush, green plants and the tall, strong trees you made.
I celebrate the spectacular assortment of animals you brought to life.  Their variety delights me.
To view videos of magnificent lions, tuxedo-suited penguins, and rollie pollie polar bears brings me joy.
To watch wiggly puppies and carefree kittens brings a smile to my face and a spring to my step.
To see colorful tropical fish glide through crystal-clear water adds refreshment to my day.
Lord, you knew how much I would enjoy your creation - even before my entrance into your world. You prepared a beautiful place for me to live, and I will praise you for your handiwork.
Amen

THE POWER OF PRAYER

As Moms finish up spending the season with their "home for the summer" young ones, it seems they could use a pat on the back and a bit of encouragement. Our children are grown but I haven't forgotten how all consuming the task of raising a family can be. I came across a website which lists 31 virtues to pray over your children. I think it is an excellent idea. We are partners  with the Lord in child rearing. We are not alone and without help from the power of the Holy Spirit. We can cover our children daily with prayer and really see amazing results. So I've decided to list these virtues / prayers / prophetic declarations in hopes that they will help someone along in their journey.

 1. Salvation
“Lord, let salvation spring up within my children, that they may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with external glory” (Is. 45:8, 2 Tim. 2:10) .

2. Growth in grace.
“I pray that my children may grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 3:18).

3. Love.
“Grant, Lord, that my children may learn to live a life of love, through the Spirit who dwells in them” (Gal. 5:25. Eph. 5:2).

4. Honesty and integrity.
“May integrity and honesty be their virtue and their protection” (Ps. 25:21).

5. Self-control.
“Father, help my children not to be like many others around them, but let them be alert and self-controlled in all they do” (1 Thes. 5:6)

6. Love for God’s Word.
“May my children grow to find Your Word more precious than much pure gold and sweeter than honey from the comb” (Ps. 19:10)

7. Justice.
“God, help my children to love justice as You do and act justly in all they do” (Ps. 11:7, Mic. 6:8)

8. Mercy. “May my children always be merciful, just as their Father is merciful: (Lk. 6:36).

9. Respect (for self, others, authority). “Father, grant that my children may show proper respect to everyone, as your Word commands” (1 Pet. 2:17).

10. Biblical self-esteem. “Help my children develop a strong self-esteem that is rooted in the realization that they are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:10).

11. Faithfulness. “Let love and faithfulness never leave my children, but bind these twin virtues around their necks and write them on the tablet of their hearts” (Prov. 3:3).

12. Courage.
“May my children always be strong and courageous in their character and in their actions” (Dt. 31:6).

13. Purity.
“Create in them a pure heart. O God, and let that purity of heart be shown in their actions” (Ps. 51:10).

14. Kindness
“Lord, may my children always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else” (1 Thess. 5:15).
